The music of cacti is placed within the realm of indie folk featuring layered guitars, velvety strings and soulful melodies that weave tales of broken hearts and lingering regret. This songwriting collaboration between Thinh Duc Tran and Jessie England was born after a late-night wobbly bike ride home from a punk rock show.
Thinh honed his chops in the underground ska-punk-reggae scene of Copenhagen, while Jessie cut her teeth playing indie rock and classical music in Austin, Texas. They aimed to combine their unique backgrounds to create music that drew inspiration from pop rock and americana.
After spending time writing and recording, they enlisted drummer Emilie Brandt and bass player Henrik Chulu to enhance their live sound, and played their first gig in the fall of 2018. In the summer of 2019, they teamed up with sound engineer Kevin Le Geyt to record an EP at Ideal Bar in Vega.
Just as they were gaining momentum, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a halt and the band members welcomed new additions to their families. While cacti doesn’t have concrete plans for the future, they are thrilled to release their self-titled debut EP. The goal was and is to create music with friends – so mission accomplished.
