A song heavily influenced by the works of author Philip Pullman. In Mr Pullman's beautiful worlds a dæmon is the physical manifestation of a human soul. Since both me and Christian Olsson at UNICORNbass put our souls into the creation of a 5-stringed instrument that was neither a guitar nor a bass, what name would suit it better than "The Darc ⚜️ Dæmon”?

All three "guitar" parts are played on the 5-string baritone and recorded through the Neural DSP Quad Cortex. The main clean sound has a gain that's increasing throughout the song, controlled by Logic during the recording. Add a crunch part and a lead part in the end. The first bar though, is the DI clean from the Quad Cortex, played in reverse through the SLO-100 plugin.

The fretless bass is of course played on my first custom built bass, "The Fretless Wonder". Such a wonderful instrument. The foundation is also recorded through the Quad Cortex, singing beautifully with a lush stereo chorus. The fun part comes when the hard part kicks in. The original idea was to play this part on a fretted bass. But the difference in the lows was to big for it to work out. So I recorded the whole song on the fretless but...

...when the distortion kicks in two more channels of bass is in play. Added to the main fretless track, I also use the clean DI of the bass and running it through the Neural DSP Parallax, with the low frequencies turned off. Adding some grunt and distortion. But this wasn't enough! More is more, so the fretted demo bass recorded on "The Maple Monster" is also added, heavily distorted using the Parallax in the same way, only using the treble.
